On December 12, 2017, at Kanawha Place, Charleston, Donald Edward Cross, 89, after a long illness, passed from this life and went to his home in Heaven, where he met his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He was the son of the late Clarence E. Cross and Velma L. Duvall Cross. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Lou Foster Cross.
Don was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. He had a giving spirit and was a man that could be depended upon to help anyone who asked. Don loved to take long walks and ride his bicycle. His favorite pastime was fishing at Seneca Lake in Pocahontas County. Don was a veteran of the United States Navy, where he served from 1948 through 1952. He worked at Union Carbide in South Charleston until his retirement. Don was saved at the age of 38 and became a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, where he served on the board of trustees. Don loved young people and he and Fannie led the Youth at Mt. Pleasant during the 1970s. Among the youths’ favorite activities were the touch football games at Don and Fannie’s home. Together with his wife, Don owned and operated Reamer Grocery from the mid-1970s to 1994. Don was an active member of both the VFW and the American Legion. He loved to play the bugle in honor of his fellow veterans.
He is survived by daughter, Cindy Lou Cross Settle and husband Bob of Charleston; son, Mark David Cross of Clendenin; brother, Bobby G. Cross of Ormond Beach, Fla.; granddaughters, Carrie L. Bignall and husband Brandon of Charleston, Mindy A. Settle of Charleston, and Carly J. Proctor and husband Jared of Elkview; great – granddaughters, Abigail and Emily Bignall.
Service will be 7 p.m. Friday, December 15, at Matics Funeral Home in Clendenin. Friends may call one hour prior to service. Military rights will be performed by the American Legion Post 61, Clendenin. Burial will be at Reamer Hill Cemetery at a later date.
