Eugene L. “Gene” Dawson, 92, of Fairmont, died Sunday (Feb. 11, 2018) at West Virginia Veteran’s Nursing Facility in Clarksburg. He was born in Elkhurst, Clay County, on Feb. 19, 1925, son of the late Howard and Dulcie Ellis Dawson.
He is survived by his wife, Joann Collins Dawson of Fairmont; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Scott Aikens of Lake Anna, Virginia; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Jackie Dawson of Brownton; three granddaughters, Bobbie Jo, Regina and Amber Dawson, two great-grandchildren, Emilie and Logan, a brother George and Barbara Dawson of French Creek and a sister Patricia Strott of Maryland; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by nine sisters, Wanita, Lois, Dode, Evelyn, June, Joan, Alta, Alda and Barbara; and one infant brother, Howard.

He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a heavy equipment operator and surface miner retiring from Island Creek Coal Company in 1986 as a mining foreman.

The family expresses their thanks to the caring staff in the Serenity Gardens section of the West Virginia Veteran’s Nursing Facility.

At Gene’s request, his body was cremated and will be buried privately at a later date in the Trinity Cemetery on Brushy Fork Road in Harrison County.

Family and friends may call from 2-3 p.m. Thursday at Ross Funeral Home, 801 Fairmont Avenue, Fairmont. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with Richard Vanhorn officiating.
