Mary Kaye Summers Martin, 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Grant, FL with her family by her side, on March 1, 2018. She was born in Clay, WV to Alexander H. Summers and Hattie Young Summers.
She attended and graduated from Morris Harvey College in Charleston, WV. She taught grades 1-8 in a one room school n Blue Knob, WV. Mary, Mike and children moved to Eau Gallie, FL in 1958. She then taught school in Brevard County, FL for over 25 years.
She was a former member of the John Young Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Charleston, WV. She was also Teacher of the Year at Dr. W.J. Creel Elementary School in 1979/1980. After retirement she volunteered at the community library and Sebastian River Hospital.
Mary is survived by her two children, daughter Hattie M. (Jack) Eschenberg of Grant, FL and son Charles (Deborah) Martin of Wallback, WV, sister Jo Ann S. (Jack) Carney, Melbourne, FL and special nephew James (Gail) Miller of Duck, WV. She was blessed to have six grandchildren, John Eschenberg, Diane Eschenberg, Kathrine E. Herman, Tiffany M. Redders, Summer M. Lilly and Michelle M. Pursley, 14 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She also leaves behind her dog and loyal companion, Winston.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mike P. Martin (1991) and son Michael P. Martin III (2011).
Mom loved to tell stories of growing up in Clay and went back there as often as possible to visit with family and friends. She enjoyed living in Florida, but her heart always longed for the hills of WV. Her favorite song was “West Virginia Hills”.
No service will be held per her wishes. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Wallback, WV later in the year.
