Paul Eugene Bird, 90, of Clendenin, passed away Friday, January 5, 2018, at home after a long illness.
He was the son of the late Stephen Lloyd and Ester L. Wanner Bird. He was also preceded in death by his five brothers.
Paul was a member of The Clendenin Advent Christian Church of Clendenin, a retired employee of Union Carbide and a WWII Navy veteran.
He is survived by wife, Jenny Bird; daughter, Vickie Lynn Bird McKown (Bub); son, Jeffrey Paul Bird (Kim); grandchildren, Christine McKown, Melissa Love, Justin Bird and Kara Bird; great-grandchildren, Jon Arnold, Emma Arnold and Madeline McKown Tignor.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, January 9, at Matics Funeral Home Clendenin. The funeral will follow the visitation at noon Tuesday at Matics Funeral Home, with Pastor Nahum Balser and Pastor Mike Todorovich officiating. Burial will be in the Board Cemetery Clendenin.

Richard Keith “Rick” Taylor II, 36, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at home.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Charles “Pete” and Sybil Taylor; maternal grandparents, Lorentz “Hoppy” and Audra Hopkins.
Rick was a Welder, member of Pipeline Local Union 798, in Tulsa, Okla. He enjoyed hunting and trout fishing, he liked working on the farm and he loved the outdoors.
Rick is survived by wife, Melissa Taylor; daughter, Sophie Kei Taylor; parents, Richard K. “Rick” and Denise Taylor; brothers, Jeremy and Matthew Taylor; nephews, Parker and Logan Taylor; and niece, Addison Taylor.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, January 8, at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin. The funeral will follow the visitation at noon Monday at the funeral home, with Paul Hopkins II officiating. Burial will be in the Grose Cemetery, Ovapa.

Arden Edward Carte, 69, of Pinch, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at home after a long illness.
He was a 1967 graduate of Herbert Hoover High School. He was a retired coal miner with District 17.
Arden loved the outdoors. He loved fishing and hunting and had a passion for teaching archery to children. He would often go out driving with his wife, Donna, to see how many deer the could find. (more…)

Phyllis June Mitchell Taylor, 81, passed away January 2, 2018, from a long battle with dementia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Taylor; father, Dempsey (Tobe) Mitchell; mother, Amanda (Mandy) Mitchell; brothers, Alfred, Edward and Allen Mitchell; sister, Donna Jean Hall.
She is survived by daughter, Freda Stricker (Mike); sons, Robert “Bob” Taylor (Becky), Steve Taylor (Tammy), Larry “Scoot” Taylor (Lynn), Randy Taylor (Libby) and William “Billy” (Kathy); several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great – great – grandchildren; brothers, William “Toon” Mitchell and Charles Vincent Mitchell; sisters, Shirley Faulkner and Carolyn Barker.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday, January 7, at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with Pastor Darris Barker officiating. Burial will be in King – Mullins Cemetery, Bomont.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, January 6, at Matics Funeral Home.

Nancy Kate Abel, of Elkview, passed away December 27, 2017.
Nancy was born September 30, 1937, in Newport, Tenn., to the late William and Blanche (Neas) Hogan.
She attended Parrottsville High School in Parrottsville, Tenn. She continued her education at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn. She enjoyed crosswords, Sudoku and travel, taking numerous cruises with her friends. She was active in her church, visiting with others in the congregation. (more…)

Jimmie Edgar Martin, 81, of Elkview, passed away on Friday, December 29, 2017, at home with his family.
He was retired from the Robert C. Byrd Health Center and had worked for Elk Refinery for 21 years prior to their closing of the plant. Jimmie served his country in the U.S. Army and attended Blue Creek Advent Christian Church. He liked to go hunting, cooking and enjoyed quality time with family. (more…)

John Roger Sloan, 71, of Clendenin, passed away Monday, January 1, 2018, at CAMC Memorial Hospital, after a short illness.
He was the son of the late Carl N. Sloan and Delphia Gay Abbott Sloan. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jack Sloan; sister, Virginia Cummings.
John was a member of the United Mine Workers. He was also a former employee of Welding Inc., Kanawha County Parks and Recreation, and Shafer Pipeline. (more…)

Earl Vaughn Drake, 85, of Clendenin, passed away January 1, 2018, at Hubbard Hospice House after a short illness.
Earl was the only son of the late Tarlton V. (Tike) Drake and Hattie Guinn Drake. Earl was also preceded in death by the love of his life, Wanda Wyatt Drake; sisters, Naomi Samples, Mary Carper, Hellen Young, Ruth Carper, Hannah Drake and June Logan. (more…)

Ronald Isaac Holmes, 73, of Elkview, went home to be with the Lord December 30, 2017.
He was a born again Christian bought and paid for by the blood of Jesus Christ. He attended Union Valley Gospel Tabernacle Church Sissonville.
Ronald was a Vietnam Army veteran and a retired barber with several years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mose and Wanda Holmes; and brother, Dick Holmes. (more…)
