Melody Wilkinson, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, who directs the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at the School of Nursing & Health Studies, has been selected as a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
“I am humbled and honored to join such a dedicated and distinguished group of nurse practitioner leaders,” Wilkinson says. “As a fellow, I look forward to partnering with colleagues to explore innovative ways to advance the NP profession and participating in initiatives that will impact health and wellness at the national and international levels.”
The fellows program was founded 18 years ago with the intent of “. . . engaging recognized NP leaders who have made outstanding contributions to NP education, policy, clinical practice or research, and developing NP leaders of the future,” the organization says.
The application process includes receiving the support of two sponsors, as well as “[meeting] the selection criteria of demonstrated exceptional contributions and outcomes in two of the following areas: research, clinical practice, education or policy.”
‘SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT’
At Georgetown, Wilkinson leads a large and nationally focused FNP Program, an online specialty of the master’s program in nursing that reaches hundreds of students in areas across the country. She has particular interest in the care of individuals with HIV/AIDS, as well as rural health and well-being. Wilkinson has created an opportunity for students to participate in community-based learning activity in her native state of West Virginia.
Mary S. Haras, PhD, MBA, APN, NP-C, CNN, who chairs the Department of Advanced Nursing Practice at NHS, congratulated Wilkinson “on this esteemed accomplishment,” while noting that her colleague will be inducted in late June during the AANP National Conference in Denver.
“This significant achievement is well deserved and highlights Dr. Wilkinson’s commitment to her professional field,” adds Patricia Cloonan, PhD, RN, the school’s dean. “It also honors her work as an innovative faculty member who maximizes creativity within the distance education environment to offer meaningful learning opportunities for our students.”
