HURRICANE, W.Va. – Herbert Hoover (28-0) stunned Hurricane 3-0 Thursday night in a high school softball regular-season game.
The Huskies, a power in Class AA, scored all of their runs in the second inning as Taylor Carpenter smashed a bases-loaded double, one of just two hits permitted by Harlie Vannatter, who struck out 10 and and walked two.
The Redskins (19-3), the defending Class AAA state champion, managed just three hits, all singles, two by Lindsey Phares. Winning pitcher Delani Buckner struck out nine and walked one.

CHESAPEAKE 10, FAIRLAND 7: Jordan Storms went 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI to lead the Panthers to a regular-season triumph over the Dragons. Winning pitcher Brooke Webb went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs. Ryleigh Swann was 3-for-4 with three RBI.
For Fairland, Adrianna Huffman went 4-for-4 and Morgan Fridley 2-for-4.
GALLIA ACADEMY 10, UNIOTO 0: The Blue Angels (18-5) defeated the Shermans to win a Division II sectional title. Hunter Copley allowed four hits and struck out five in hurling a shutout. Alex Barnes and Rylee Sipple each smacked three hits.
SHERMAN 8, BUFFALO 7: The Tide took advantage of seven Bison errors to win its seventh consecutive Class A, Region 4, Section 2 championship. Sherman overcame a 5-0 deficit.
Baseball
IRONTON 4, OAK HILL 1: Garrett Carrico allowed one run on six hits, struck out five and walked one as the Fighting Tigers (7-11) defeated the Oaks in a Division III sectional tournament game. Carrico also went 2-for-3, as did Tanner Bowles.
CHESAPEAKE 3, NELSONVILLE-YORK 1: Bretton Martin shut out the Buckeyes in a Division III sectional tournament game. Hayden Henson was 2-for-2. Kelton Jones went 2-for-3
WAHAMA 11, WIRT COUNTY 2: Anthony Ortiz smashed three hits and David Hendrick two as the White Falcons (16-11) beat the Tigers in a Class A, Region IV, Section 1 tournament game. Hendrick drove in three runs.
WATERFORD 5, SYMMES VALLEY 4: Noah Huffman doubled, then scored on a throwing error in the ninth inning to give the Wildcats a victory over the Vikings in a Division IV sectional tournament contest. The Vikings wasted a 14-strikeout performance from pitcher Layken Gothard.
WINFIELD 8, NITRO 1: The Generald scored six runs in the sixth inning to pull away in the Class AA, Region IV, Section 1 elimination game. Nick Edwards and Peyton Stove each drove in two runs. Josh Adkins homered.
LOGAN 10, LINCOLN COUNTY 3: Matt Brown’s grand slam helped the Wildcats beat the Panthers in a Class AA, Region IV, Section 2 elimination game. Michael Hall and Bailey Ratliff joined Brown with two hits apiece.
POCA 16, POINT PLEASANT 6: Evan McKneely had three hits and drove in six runs to help the Dots defeat the Big Blacks. Isaac McClanahan smacked three hits and drove in three runs. Tanner Miller had three hits and two RBI.
MEIGS 6, SOUTHEASTERN 2: Zach Helton went 2-for-3 with a RBI to help the Marauders to a Division II sectional semifinal triumph over the the Panthers. Brentten Young and Briar Wolfe each were 2-for-4.
PORTSMOUTH WEST 15, PORTSMOUTH 5: The Senators pounded 20 hits to defeat the Trojans in a Division III sectional tournament semifinal game.
