ELKVIEW – The Mingo Central Miners, ranked No. 4 in Class AA, improved to 6-1 on the season with a decisive 66-44 lead over Herbert Hoover Friday night at the Elkview Middle School gym.

The trio of Jeremy Dillon, Drew Hatfield and Garrett Brown combined for 56 point. Dillon, a senior who is head to Marshall University next season, scored 20 points. Hatfield, a sophomore, swished in 21 including three 3-pointers. Brown, also a senior, scored 15 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Brown also nailed a trio of 3s in the game.

Mingo Central jumped out to an 8-0 lead and led 19-7 after the first quarter. Dillon and Hatfield both had six points in the opening period.

The Miners built onto their lead in the second quarter and led 36-17 at the half. Dillon had 14 points in the first half, Hatfield 10 and Brown seven.

Mingo led 54-28 after three quarters. Coach Kevin Hatfield cleared his bench in the final quarter as his team coasted to the Cardinal Conference win.

The one negative for MCHS in the game was that they were a little sloppy committing 18 turnovers.

The Miners finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field making 17-54 shots including eight 3-pointers.

Wes Milam didn’t score, but contributed four assists and three steals for the Miners. Senior Chase Warden, seeing his first action of the season after nursing an ankle injury suffered in football season, scored 3 points and senior Josh Reed scored 4 points.

Grant Bonner led the Huskies with 12 points. As a team HHHS made eight 3-pointers.

The Miners will travel to Tug Valley on Tuesday night for their next contest and then host Phillip Barbour next weekend on Miner Mountain.
