Man wanted for stabbing in Roane County

SPENCER — Man suspected in a Roane County stabbing is on the run.

Roane County Sheriff’s Department is looking for Joseph Daniels.

According to deputies, a person was stabbed at about 2:10 a.m. on Friday, and received injuries not considered to be life threatening.

Deputies say Joseph Daniels is considered armed and dangerous.

Daniels is described as a white man, 5’7″ tall and weighs about 200 pounds. Daniels has multiple tattoos and a large beard.

Daniels is believed to be in a tan or golden colored 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport, West Virginia license 1PE 117.

Daniels is believed to be running to Branchland in Lincoln County, which is on the border of Cabell County.

Deputies say if you see Joseph Daniels, do not approach him. Call 911 or call the Roane County Sheriff’s Department at 304-927-3410.

Elk River Boxing Club holds grand opening for new Elkview location

Elk River Boxing Club owner Rob Fletcher and his staff introduced current and potential members and guests to the club’s new location in Elkview on Thursday.

Previously located in downtown Clendenin, the Elk River Boxing Club is now open at 5522 Elk River North in Elkview, behind the former worksite of Wally’s Rope.

“We wanted some place that was a little more convenient for our members,” Fletcher said of the move from the Clendenin locale it has occupied for the past two years. “We’ll be seven miles south of the last location. We have members coming from Elkview, Big Chimney, Charleston, Hurricane and St. Albans — that seven miles means a lot. Some people had to drive for 45 minutes or an hour to get to the old location.

“It’s a nice facility,” he said, “and a little more centered to our members’ location.”

The new Elkview gym and fitness center “has more use-able space. The last building was bigger, but I couldn’t use the facility the way I wanted to. It was in a 120-year-old building and I had some problems with that,” Fletcher explained.

The new location will still provide the classes and training the Clendenin one did, he said. These include children’s boxing classes for ages 5 to 8 and regular boxing, kickboxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts classes.

Fletcher said his gym has a core membership of about a dozen people, who come from Kanawha, Putnam, Roane and Clay counties to hone their fighting and self-defense skills, as exercise for some and competitive training for others.

“We have all ages — from 10 up to their 60s — taking classes. We have a retired Marine from Clendenin who comes for physical fitness. He can do more pushups than any teenager you’ve ever seen,” Fletcher said.

Thursday’s grand opening celebration offered demonstrations of some of the disciplines members undertake, along with refreshments for newcomers and longtime members. Sign-up opportunities were available during the evening, as well.

Nancy Virginia (Oblak) Moore, 64, of Elkview, died unexpectedly on February 27, 2018.

She was born on May 28, 1953, in Mt. Pleasant, Pa. Nancy graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Master’s degree. After moving to West Virginia, she worked as a teacher at Walton Elementary, as well as middle and high schools in Roane County. She was a winner of the 1999 Milken Educator Award. (more…)

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — School systems across West Virginia were cancelling again for Friday after a teacher pay raise proposal backed by the governor passed the House of Delegates but has yet to move in the Senate.

Charleston W.Va. — If you’ve never been able to experience this before, your chance–a really good chance–is coming up soon thanks to our West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

Starting this Friday, and going through May 19th, 27 different streams and lakes across our state parks will be stocked with a nice variety of trout–and you’ll be able to know when and where ahead of time!

(Stephen McDaniel, Director West Virginia Division of Natural Resources) “These are different because the dates and locations are being published in advance. we’ve never done that here at the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, and we’re hoping that will entice some of the beginner anglers to come out and give trout fishing a try”.

And trust me, it’s easy to get ‘hooked’. These Friday and Saturday stockings will also help those that are too busy during the week–to possibly bring their families out to make a weekend out of it. The hope is also to get even more people out to our beautiful state parks.

(Stephen McDaniel, Director West Virginia Division of Natural Resources) “We’re trying to promote tourism with these, and we have several lakes and streams that are located in the general area of state parks, so we thought that would be a good place to start, because it’s on the weekends. We’re hoping that people will come out and maybe rent a camping site, or a cabin, or a lodge–and make it a family deal”.

These stockings won’t impact other stockings across the state, either. all waters will receive the same amount of trout that they typically do.

Everyone is so pleased and so happy that, you know, it all comes back down to working men and women, students and kids–it’s just something we’re trying to do for them”.

PROMISE application and FAFSA filing deadline for students March 1

According to the College Foundation of West Virginia’s (CFWV) tweet, today is the deadline to file the FAFSA and complete the PROMISE scholarship application to be considered for PROMISE.

To learn more about the West Virginia PROMISE scholarship and eligibility requirements visit CFWV’s website.

The PROMISE Scholarship is a merit-based financial aid program for West Virginia residents. Students who achieve certain academic requirements are eligible to receive funds to help pay for college. Eligible high school graduates will receive annual awards up to $4,750 to cover the cost of tuition and mandatory fees at public or independent institutions in West Virginia. Awards are contingent upon annual funding of the program by the West Virginia State Legislature.

2018 Annual Gold-Blue Spring Game Set

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University will hold its annual Gold-Blue Spring Game presented by U.S. Cellular on Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m., at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium.

Tickets are available in advance for $10 each and can be purchased online at WVUGAME.com or by calling 1-800-WVU GAME. WVU students will be admitted free with a valid ID. Information on the stadium, parking, online streaming and television broadcast will be released at a later date.

A portion of the proceeds from the Gold-Blue Game once again will benefit WVU Medicine Children’s. Since 1984, the Mountaineers have donated more than $740,000 to WVU Medicine Children’s.
