Guy Monroe Braley, 100, of Elkview, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at CAMC Memorial after a short illness.

He was the son of the late Charles Allen Braley and Martha Jane Jarrett Braley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia L. Ginger Braley; son, Rick Braley; and 10 brothers and sisters.

He was an Army veteran of WWII. He was a retired barber at City Barber Shop in Clendenin. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW. (more…)

After six months of singing bass in a barbershop chorus, I’d become a little brave. When I heard Clendenin United Methodist Church held an annual community singing of Handel’s “Messiah,” I signed up.

I’ve never been accused of being overly religious. But it seemed important that if I was going to spend some time exploring Christmas, I needed to acknowledge the reason for the season, which is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Arguments can be made that we’ve got the day and the month wrong, or that Christmas is an adaptation of old Pagan traditions, or that the current practice of Christmas has less and less to do with faith and more with commerce. (more…)

Dollar General presents surprise check to Clendenin Elementary

CLENDENIN, W.Va. (WSAZ) — The students at Clendenin-Bridge Elementary received an early Christmas present from a national store.

Dollar General presented the school a $10,000 check Thursday to support their library and literacy initiatives.

This is part of Dollar General’s commitment to serve others through their “12 Days of Giving” campaign.

Teachers say the money will go toward purchasing books and science equipment to help prepare the students for a brighter future. (more…)

Holly Ray Brisendine, 84, of Clendenin, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 17, 2017, at CAMC Memorial after a long illness.

He was the son of the late Otis H. Brisendine and Nellie Smith Brisendine. He was also preceded in death by his wife, “Jackie” Jacquelyn (Welch) Brisendine; daughter, Angela Brisendine; brothers, Charles, James and Homer Brisendine; sisters, Clara Brisendine and Chessie Brisendine. (more…)

Tractor trailer hauling scrapped vehicles crashes on I-79S

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) — The slow lane of I-79 southbound in between Elkview and Clendenin in Kanawha County is shut down.

A tractor trailer crashed at mile marker 16 at 6:35 Wednesday morning.

The truck was hauling scrapped vehicles. Those vehicles are littered along side of I-79.

Crews will have to pick those up and upright the tractor trailer before the slow southbound lane will reopen. (more…)
